Description

This is a villa, dating from approximately 1832 to 1842, originally commissioned for Lieutenant-Colonel William Munro of the East India Company. It has since been converted into flats and retains attached railings. The villa is constructed of brick with stucco facades, covered by a slate roof. It is three storeys high with a basement, and has three windows on the first floor. The exterior features horizontal rustication to the ground floor, a plat band and Doric pilasters supporting a cornice on the first floor. There is also a further cornice and blocking course above the second floor. The central entrance porch has paired Doric pilasters, an architrave, frieze, cornice and blocking course, leading to a six-panel door with side-lights and overlight. The ground floor windows are tripartite with 2/2 sashes and lancet glazing to the heads; the first floor windows are similar, paired, with margin-lights; the second floor has 6/6 sashes; and the basement has 8/8 sashes, also with margin-lights. A stack with a cornice is located on the right-hand end. The right return features blind openings. The rear elevation has 6/6 sashes, some with margin-lights, while the left return is one window deep and has blind openings. The rear retains 6/6 sashes and an 8/8 sash with margin-lights. The interior of the building has not been inspected. Notably, ornate scrolled iron railings are situated on either side of the entrance steps. The villa was built as part of a larger development undertaken for Joseph Pitt between 1825 and 1842.
