Description
The Boer War Memorial, located approximately 10 metres east of number 47 on the Promenade in Cheltenham, was erected in 1907. It features a bronze statue of a soldier wearing a pith helmet, with a downcast gaze and a reversed rifle. The statue stands on a high stone plinth that includes names and explanatory material displayed in panels and on the steps. The statue was carved by R.L. Boulton and Sons of Cheltenham and cast by A.B. Burton of Thames Ditton. The Promenade itself was established in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue connecting the Colonnade in the High Street to the Sherbourne Spa, which is now the site of the Queen's Hotel.
