Description

A pair of semi-detached villas, numbers 8 and 10, were built around 1826-30. They are constructed of stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof, a central stucco stack featuring a cornice on console brackets, and attached iron balconies and railings. The villas have a double-depth plan with a side hall and full-height service ranges to the rear.

The exterior is two storeys high, with six first-floor windows (a 3:3 arrangement), and gates and piers on either side. The stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor with flat arches over the windows, a first-floor band, and elliptically-arched tooled architraves and sills on feet to the first-floor windows. A crowning moulded band and wide eaves, supported by brackets with incised panels between, complete the exterior. The first floor has horizontally-sliding sash windows with two panes per sash, while the ground floor windows have single panes and horns. The end entrances feature flights of roll-edged steps leading to recessed six-panel doors, with raised and fielded upper panels and flush lower panels, accompanied by sidelights and overlights. The basement windows are six-pane sashes. Attached plank gates have peaked caps. The rear of the buildings retain six-pane sashes; the window to number 10 is a tripartite window with two-paned sashes. Returns to the front feature tall sash windows with two panes per sash.

The interiors retain original joinery, including panelled shutters, although the rest of the interior was not inspected. The ground floor balcony features alternate embellished and wavy rods, while the railings to the sides of the steps have embellished rods and a wreathed handrail. Numbers 3-19 (odd) and 4-18 (even) form a group with group value context.
