Description

This is a house, now offices, dating from approximately 1834 to 1850. It is located on a corner site in Cheltenham and forms a group with the adjacent buildings numbered 6, 7, and 8. The building is constructed of stucco over brick, with a concealed roof, brick to the right end, and ridge and rear stacks.

The main architectural feature is the two-storey design with a basement, featuring four first-floor windows. A roll-moulded plinth is present, along with stucco detailing, including full-height Doric pilasters to the ends and between the windows. The pilasters to either side of the doorway are positioned closer together to emphasize the entrance. Other details include a first-floor band and a crowning entablature. The first floor has 6/6 sash windows, the ground floor has 8/8 sash windows, and the basement has 3/6 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with sills. An off-centre left entrance is accessed by a flight of roll-edged steps leading to a four-panel door with side-lights and a fanlight decorated with an inverted-batwing-and-circle motif. The left return side has three first-floor windows and a single-storey, single-bay outshot with end pilasters, an entablature, and a blocking course with copings. A blind 6/6 sash window is visible on the first floor, third bay. A second entrance, also off-centre and to the left, has six-panel part-glazed double doors and a segmental fanlight decorated with an inverted teardrop and circle motif. The interior of the building was not inspected. Attached railings feature an arrowhead design to the areas and anthemions to the stanchions. The building is described as "modest, well-proportioned" by Verey.
