Description
The Synagogue in Cheltenham was built between 1837 and 1839 by architect W.H. Knight and builder Mr. Hastings. It features a classical stucco facade with Roman Doric pilasters that create a small portico with an entablature and pediment. The central entrance has double doors flanked by Doric pilasters and a dentil entablature, with a single elliptically-arched window above, adorned with an eared architrave and keystone. The interior is completely unaltered and showcases grained woodwork, with fittings sourced from a demolished synagogue in Leadenhall Street, London. This building is recognized as an outstanding example of a small provincial English synagogue.
