Description
The Walter Higgs tomb chest, located 1 metre east of the south transept of the Church of St Mary in Charlton Kings, dates from around 1700. It commemorates Walter Higgs, who died in 1698, and his daughter Anne, who passed away in 1684. The tomb chest is made of ashlar and features a slate inscription panel on the south side, along with iron cresting. The ends of the chest have scrolled acanthus consoles that create a lyre shape, with a scallop shell motif positioned between them. Carved swags with foliage flank the panel, and there is a fielded oval on the north side. The cast-iron cresting is found on the capping. Walter Higgs served as a commissioned officer under King Charles I.
