Description

This is an unoccupied house and adjoining barn located approximately 40 metres east-north-east of Higher Cliston. The building dates from the 17th century, with the barn likely added in the 18th century. It features cob walls and a gable-ended corrugated iron roof, with some thatch at the barn end. There is a brick stack at the right gable end.

The original layout of the house was probably a three-room-and-through or cross passage plan, but the higher end to the left has been significantly rebuilt and extended to serve as a barn. The lower room and hall are heated, with the hall having a stack backing onto the passage. There may have been a newel stair in front of the lower end stack.

The exterior has two storeys and an asymmetrical three-window front with the barn at the left-hand end. It features 19th-century leaded pane two and three-light casements. There is a 19th-century plank door to the former passage located to the right of centre, with an oven projection to its left. A shallow rectangular projection is present in front of the right-hand end. The left-hand end of the original house has double doors leading into it, while the taller barn beyond has a wide cart entrance at the centre and a door at the right-hand end.

Inside, there are chamfered ceiling beams with step stops, two open fireplaces with chamfered lintels, and the roof trusses have been completely renewed.
