Description

Higher Haye Farmhouse is an early 17th-century farmhouse with alterations from the mid-19th century and 20th century. It is constructed of slatestone rubble, with a rendered front porch, stair tower, part of the rear and left return, and brick with 19th-century brick dressings. The roof is slate, with gable stacks, and hipped at the upper level to the left, featuring a large, weathered stack. Originally a three-room and through-passage plan, the passage has been closed, with an axial hall stack backing onto it. Gable-end stacks heat the inner room and kitchen at the lower end. A large porch is positioned at the front of the passage, with a stair turret in the angle to the right of the hall and a lean-to outshut in the angle to the left, in front of the kitchen. A later lean-to extension to the rear contains service rooms, heated to the rear right. The two-storey gabled porch on the left has a two-centred stopped and chamfered granite opening and door with a glazed panel, a 20th-century two-light casement above, and a small single-light to the right side. A brick lean-to is situated in the angle to the left, with a 20th-century single light to the side. To the right of the porch, the stair tower has a roof pitch extended from the main roof and a two-light casement to the front with two panes each light. The main range to the right is two storeys high with two windows. The ground floor has two two-light casements with brick segmental heads and sides, a 20th-century window to the right, and two smaller two-light casements under the eaves, also 20th century. A shed is attached to the right. The left gable end features a small gabled porch and a 19th-century two-light casement above. The rear elevation has a roof extended to a lower level. On the ground floor to the right, there is a 19th-century two-light casement with a small gable above, containing a two-light casement, and a small single-storey 20th-century lean-to with a door and a three-pane light. To the left of the lean-to, there is an eight-pane light under the eaves in exposed box, with a similar ground-floor opening below, previously a door. A small off-centre six-pane light is positioned nearby, along with a 20th-century two-light casement and a similar casement on the right return. The front porch contains a segmental-headed arched opening to the rear passage, and a plank and ledged door with strap hinges to the room to the left. The former tower end features a similar arched opening with pyramid stops, and an early 19th-century panelled door to the hall room to the right. That room has narrow chamfered irregular beams, two to the left with mortices, and a step up to the inner room which includes a 19th-century cupboard and a ceiling. A wooden winder stair is located in the tower. The roof is not accessible.
