Description
Handon Pen is a house located in Hatherleigh, likely dating from the mid-17th century, though it may have earlier origins. The structure features plastered cob and rubble walls and a gable-ended thatch roof, with brick stacks at each gable end. The internal layout is not entirely clear due to restricted access, but it is probably arranged with two rooms and possibly a small unheated service room at the center. There is a newel stair projection behind the right-hand room. At the left-hand end, there is a small outbuilding, which may be either integral to the house or slightly later, and it could have served as a stable.
The exterior of the house is two stories high and has a regular three-window front, featuring early 20th-century three-light casements, with a two-light window at the center on the first floor. The central section of the facade projects slightly and includes a 20th-century plank door. The outbuilding at the left-hand end has a door with a loading hatch above it. Although the interior was inaccessible during the survey, it is believed to contain heavy ceiling beams and open fireplaces, and early roof timbers may also still be present.
