Description
The statue located about 5 meters south of the Manor Hotel is a late 19th-century bronze figure on a granite column with a moulded base and cap. The statue depicts a gooseherd holding a goose under each arm and is likely of German origin. The Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould, who served as both squire and parson at Lew Trenchard from 1881 until his death in 1924, was responsible for rebuilding Lew House, now the Manor Hotel, and incorporated various fittings collected locally and from Europe. He described the house and its surroundings, including this statue, as having "herbaceous borders full of flowers, a granite fountain, always playing, with the figure of an Alastian gooseherd, imagine it on a sunlit evening." The statue is included for its group value with the Manor Hotel.
