Description
No. 7 Drake Road is a former brewery that likely incorporates a reused roof from Tavistock Abbey. It serves as the back range to Nos. 10-12 Market Street and is mostly hidden behind them. The building was probably constructed in the late 17th century by Nicholas Hunt, a maltster who served as Mayor in 1683 and Senior Overseer in 1704 and 1711. The elevation facing Drake Road is one storey high, while the Market Street elevation is three storeys tall and built of stone ashlar, connected by a long flight of stone steps. It features two granite archways with three-centred heads, keystones, moulded spandrels, and stop-moulded jambs. The building retains twelve impressive roof trusses with curved collars of substantial form, likely from the 16th century and salvaged from one of the Abbey buildings. In the early to mid-18th century, it functioned as a malthouse and later became part of a brewery.
