Description
Eastcott Cottage, located 50 meters north of Eastcott Barton, is a farmhouse that has been converted into a cottage, possibly dating back to the 16th century. The building features painted plastered stone rubble and cob, topped with a steeply pitched asbestos slate roof with gable ends. The eaves have been raised, and the cottage was previously thatched. There are brick stacks on the right-hand gable end and to the right of the center. The original plan has been significantly altered, but it may have originally consisted of three rooms with a cross passage in a single-depth layout.
The cottage is two stories tall and has an asymmetrical four-window front. On the ground floor, there are double plank doors leading to a store on the left, along with a 20th-century window. A stone rubble porch with a lean-to asbestos slate roof features a wide timber door with tall narrow panels and a lock rail. To the right, there is another 20th-century window. The first floor has four 19th-century casement windows with two and three lights, all with glazing bars.
At the rear, there is evidence of partial rebuilding of the walls with a slight rear projection. On the first floor to the right, there is a very small two-light chamfered stone window with slight ogee heads to the lights, carved from a single piece of stone. Inside, the cottage has large, widely spaced unchamfered ceiling beams in the lower end, and a 20th-century timber lintel above the fireplace in the lower end. The roof is likely from the 18th century, featuring a collar rafter design with lapped and pegged collars.
