Description

Kingsford Mill is a miller's house from the 18th century that was enlarged in the mid-19th century and restored in the late 20th century. The original building is roughcast over cob and features a thatched roof, while the 19th-century extension is built of random rubble local stone with brick dressings and has a shallow pitch stone slate roof. The house is arranged in an L-shape, consisting of a single-cell 18th-century cottage that has been extended with a dairy at the west gable end and another single-cell block at right angles. The entrance is located on the east front through the later block, and a cow byre on the west front has been converted into a sunroom.

The east front of the house is two storeys high and has two bays. The first floor features late 19th-century, many-paned, two-light casements set below the eaves. The ground floor has a segmental brick relieving arch with a three-light late 20th-century window, and the entrance is to the right via a plank door. The original cottage has one two-light casement below a wooden lintel on the first floor, with an opening in the centre. The ground floor features wooden lintels and similar two-light casements, although the left-hand one has been altered. The east gable end has a wooden lintel to a former opening beside the chimney breast, which now contains an inserted fanlight window. The north front of the original cottage is lit only by a two-light casement on the first floor to the right.

Inside, there are exposed joists and a roughly chamfered lintel above the fireplace in the east gable end, as well as a similar open fireplace in the south gable end. Staircases rise opposite the entrance and in the north-west corner of the original dwelling. The block contains three pairs of collar beam trusses. The corn and grist mill was operational until around 1940, when it was largely gutted by fire and the millwheel was removed. The remaining mill buildings are located to the north of the miller's house, and there are extensive remains of the mill leat.
