Description

Orchard Cottage is a cottage, likely originally two separate homes, now combined into one dwelling. It dates from the early 17th century and was altered in the 19th century. The exterior features smooth rendered and whitewashed walls, which are probably built on a rubble core, and a thatched roof with gabled ends. There are three chimneys: a 20th-century brick chimney on the left gable, another 20th-century brick chimney in the center, and a rubble stack of 17th-century design on the right gable, complete with a drip course and tapering cap.

The cottage has a single room depth and follows a three-room-and-through-passage plan, with the hall stack backing onto the passage. It is two storeys high and has a façade with three windows on the top and two on the bottom, featuring 2-light casements with glazing bars, except for a 20th-century single-light casement on the first floor. The door is centrally located and is a four-panelled door beneath a 20th-century slated lean-to porch, with a 2-light window to the right. The right side of the cottage has a 2-light iron casement window on the first floor with diamond-paned leaded lights, and a 3-light plastered window, likely with wooden mullions, on the ground floor, also with diamond-paned lights. There is a single-storey lean-to at the rear of the right end, featuring a slate roof and a 19th-century 2-light casement facing the front. An iron-railed forecourt adds to the setting.

Inside, there are two fireplaces with wooden bressumers on the ground floor. The roof may show evidence of cruck construction.
