Description
Higher and Over is a house with origins dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, featuring an 18th-century extension and 20th-century renovations and additions. It is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, topped with a gabled asbestos slate roof, which was formerly thatched. The house has a T-plan layout, with the earliest part being a single-depth main range that is two rooms wide, featuring a central stair hall. The right-hand end likely served as the hall or kitchen, while the left-hand fireplace also includes an oven. The rear wing is thought to be an 18th-century addition used as a parlour. The building is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical two-window front, with an off-centre 20th-century gabled porch and the front door located on the right return. The windows are three-light casements with two panes per light, featuring 20th-century diamond leading. Inside, there is a large open fireplace in the right-hand room, with one stone rubble and one granite jamb, a timber lintel, and a cloam oven, along with large exposed ceiling beams. The roof space has not been inspected, but the roof trusses may be of interest.
