Description
The Northam War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It was relocated to its current position between 1980 and 1995.
Constructed from ashlar stone, the memorial features a two-tiered base topped by a square, tapering pedestal. Atop the pedestal is a carved figure of Liberty, who holds a torch in her raised right hand. Surrounding the top of the pedestal is a biblical quote from Samuel 1:25:16: "THE MEN WERE VERY GOOD UNTO US/ THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US/ BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY." Recessed panels on all sides of the pedestal display the names of the Fallen. On the north side of the pedestal, raised lettering states "NORTHAM WAR MEMORIAL/ 1914 - 1919/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." Additionally, chamfered stones added to the north side of the base list the names of parishioners who died in the Second World War along with the dates of that conflict.
