Description
Leighbarn is an 18th-century rectangular stone building located on Burrough Road. It is the only pre-19th century structure on the property and has been adapted for use as a dwelling, now featuring a machine tile roof. The building originally had old timber lintels above its openings, and some former pigeon-holes can still be seen. Historically, this site was home to Burrough House, the ancient manor house where Stephen and William Burrough, an explorer and a Vice-Admiral, lived during Elizabethan times. It later became the residence of the Leigh family. The character Amyas Leigh, created by Kingsley, was said to have lived here, and it was also the home of Admiral Barton in the 18th century. The house was completely rebuilt in 1868 and subsequently divided into two properties: Burrough House and Burrough Farm.
