Description
This is a gate and gate piers located approximately 60 metres southeast of Bale's Ash, likely built in the mid to late 19th century by Cockeys of Frome and restored in the late 20th century. The structure features a pair of circular cast-iron gate piers and a wrought-iron gate. The piers are plain and columnar, with moulded bases and capitals topped with globe finials, although the finial on the hanging pier was missing at the time of the survey in January 1988. Each pier has the inscription "COCKEY. FROME". The six-bar gate is supported by two pairs of diagonal braces. The top of the gate connects to the cap of the hanging pier, which rotates on hidden bearings, while the bottom of the gate slides around the base of the pier. The gate includes a sliding latch with a provision for a padlock. This gateway serves as the entrance to the farmyard at Bale's Ash and is notable for its clever hanging and turning mechanism.
