Description
The courtyard of farm buildings, dating from around 1850, is located approximately 60 metres south of Winscott Barton Farmhouse. Constructed from local stone rubble with a slate roof, the courtyard is enclosed on three sides by ranges of buildings, with the open side facing east-north-east towards the farmhouse.
The northern range features a cartshed and stable at the eastern end, with a granary above. To the left of this section is a passage leading to a three-bay linhay. The western range consists of a nine-bay linhay, which continues with another three bays in the southern range, where a carriageway leads through to the lane. The eastern end contains byres or stables with haylofts above. A tall stone rubble wall encloses the east side and includes a wide gateway.
Originally, the linhays were open-fronted, with the hayloft crossbeams attached to full-height front posts, following Alcock's linhay type T1. In the 20th century, the fronts were enclosed with concrete blocks and weatherboarding, which now contain various doorways and loading hatches. Many openings still feature plain 19th-century joinery. There is also a flight of external stone steps against the end wall of the granary. The roofs are gable-ended.
Inside, the buildings showcase mostly plain mid-19th-century carpentry, including a roof structure with king post trusses. The granary retains oak boarding and shows evidence of where grain bins were once located. These buildings are notable examples of mid-19th-century farm architecture and contribute significantly to the setting of Winscott Barton Farmhouse.
