Description

Cory Barton is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, possibly earlier, that was reroofed in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of random rubble and originally had a thatched roof, now replaced with concrete tiles. It features external stacks at the gable ends, with a large stone stack on the right and a 19th-century brick stack between the second and third bays on the left.

The layout consists of three cells and a cross passage, with a wide stair located between the cross passage and the kitchen. This building is unusually wide and long, with a single-storey lean-to at the rear. It has two storeys and seven bays, all fitted with two-light casements. The end two bays on the left are much decayed, while the end bay on the right has a modern three-light casement. The ground floor includes an eight-pane casement under a wooden lintel in the left end bay, a shallow buttress adjoining the right, and a concrete lintel and sill with a 20th-century four-light casement. There is also a similar opening for a single light window beside the gabled porch, which has a plank door and a small window opening to the right in a partly rebuilt wall.

Inside, the fireplaces are blocked, and there is an 18th-century door leading from the kitchen to the yard, along with another 18th-century door to a cupboard in the kitchen. However, there are no other dateable features on the ground floor, and the upper storey has not been seen. While parts of the building are undoubtedly pre-18th century, it lacks specific dateable features. Some believe it predates Cory Manor and may be the site of the original manor house.
