Description

West Flairs Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the early to mid 17th century, although it may have earlier origins. The building has been partly rebuilt in the 19th century. Its walls are made of plastered cob and stone rubble, except for the rear and right-hand end walls, which have been rebuilt in brick. The roof is covered with corrugated iron over thatch, hipped at the left end and gabled at the right. There is a brick stack at the right gable end and a brick rear lateral stack.

The layout of the farmhouse is not entirely clear due to limited internal access, but it appears to consist of three rooms with either a through or cross-passage. The lower end is likely to the left and is unheated, while the hall is heated by the rear lateral stack and the inner room by the gable-end stack. A window bay is located at the front, possibly serving the inner room or the higher end of the hall. In the later 19th century, the rear wall and right end wall were substantially rebuilt, and a 20th-century lean-to was added behind the right-hand end.

The exterior features two storeys and has an asymmetrical front with four windows, which include 19th and early 20th-century two and three-light casements, some with small panes. There is a slightly projecting window bay towards the right-hand end with a window on each floor, and to the right of this is a 20th-century lean-to porch. A larger lean-to porch is located to the left of the centre, behind which is a 19th-century plank door. The interior was inaccessible at the time of the survey but may contain interesting features such as early ceiling beams, open fireplaces, and roof timbers.
