Description
Roseland is a house dating from the early 18th century, with later additions from the late 18th and 19th centuries. It features rendered cob and rubble walls and a hipped thatch roof, supported by two brick axial stacks. The building is believed to have originally been two or three rooms, with the central and right-hand rooms separated by an axial stack that contains back-to-back fireplaces. The left-hand room, which may have been added later, has an end fireplace for heating. The entrance into the central room may not be original, and there are C18 and C19 rear outshuts that were likely added during a period of subdivision.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has two windows on the upper floor and three on the ground floor. The ground floor windows are three-light casements from the 19th century, while the first floor has 20th-century casements to the right of the centre. There is a 20th-century lean-to brick porch to the left of centre with a glazed door, and another 20th-century glazed door at the right end.
Inside, the two open fireplaces in the axial stack have roughly chamfered wooden lintels and dressed stone jambs, each with cloam ovens. The ceiling features light scantling beams, and the principal rafters are insubstantial and straight.
