Description
Lower Upcott is a cottage dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It features rendered cob and stone rubble walls with a corrugated iron roof over thatch, gabled at the left end and half-hipped at the right. The building has a rendered rubble axial stack. The original layout is unclear, as the house likely extended into the adjoining building to the left. Currently, it consists of two main rooms, both heated by the axial stack, although the fireplace in the right-hand room may have been added later. There is a 19th-century staircase and a small room that has likely been partitioned off. An outshut from the 18th or early 19th century has been added at the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has two windows. The first floor features early 19th-century horizontal sliding sashes with 12 and 8 panes. Below, there is a 19th-century fixed window with 18 panes at the centre. To the left, there is a late inserted glazed door with a side-light, and to the right, a late 19th-century part-glazed porch. The right-hand end wall has an early 19th-century 12-pane horizontal sliding sash on the first floor and a similar 8-pane window below. The rear wall has an outshut with a 20th-century lean-to against its end.
Inside, the left-hand room has a fireplace with a roughly chamfered wooden lintel, while the right-hand room features brick jambs and a plain wooden lintel for its fireplace. No substantial roof timbers are visible on the first floor.
