Description
This is a barn located approximately 15 metres southeast of Way Barton, dating from the 16th century, with enlargements made in the 17th or 18th century and a roof replacement in the 20th century. The original section is constructed of local stone rubble laid in courses, while the enlarged parts are made of cob on stone rubble footings, topped with a corrugated asbestos roof. The barn is designed as a threshing barn, facing northwest, featuring tall double doors on the threshing floor. The entrance bays project slightly forward, and the doorways are not full height. Both doorways retain their original 16th-century oak doorframes, which have large shoulder-headed arches with chamfered surrounds. The front doors are from the 19th century, while the back doors are much older, with parts likely dating back to the 17th century, including coverstrips. The interior is open to the roof, supported by early 20th-century A-frame trusses. It is quite rare for a Devon barn to still have a 16th-century oak doorframe, and the two original shoulder-headed arch doorways are probably unique.
