Description
This building complex includes a barn, horse engine house, stable, granary, and cartshed, located approximately 20 metres southeast of Dadlands Farmhouse. It was constructed around 1840, with some minor alterations made in the late 19th century. The structure is made of uncoursed stone rubble and features a gable-ended Welsh-slate roof. The long range of the building is oriented approximately east-west, facing the farmyard to the north.
The barn is situated on the left and has opposed cart entrances, with the horse engine house projecting to the rear. The stable is located in the center, while the granary and cartshed are on the right. The range appears to have been built in two phases, as indicated by a straight joint between the barn and stable, although this likely occurred in quick succession. The buildings are generally one storey high, with the stable having an attic.
On the exterior, the barn features large boarded double doors, with the right-hand door being two-leaf, and a shallow lean-to porch supported by stone piers. There are four pigeon nesting holes located below the eaves on the right side. The stable has a boarded loft door and a pair of ground-floor 20th-century metal windows in old openings, flanking a central boarded door with a pegged wooden frame and wooden lintel. There are also pairs of pigeon nesting holes below the eaves on both sides of the stable. The former granary on the right has a boarded door, which is accessed by a short flight of stone steps. The cartshed at the right end of the range has three bays, divided by wooden posts, with the left-hand bay now serving as a garage featuring a pair of large boarded doors.
The interior likely contains a mid to late 19th-century six-bay barn roof with bolted scissor-braced trusses. Although the interior of the granary was not inspected during the survey in December 1987, the owner reported finding a date of around 1840 penciled on the plaster walls. These buildings are part of an early 19th-century planned farmstead, which also includes Dadlands Farmhouse.
