Description

This is a bollard located at the corner of 1 High Street, next to The Quay in Bideford. It is likely from the 16th or 17th century and is made of painted stone. The bollard features a sharply-battered fluted shaft with a prominent rounded neck and a large ball finial. Its purpose was probably to protect the corner of the building from carts, although it may have originally been positioned on the quay, which has since been significantly widened. There is also a suggestion that this bollard served as a 'tome stone' where payments and binding agreements were made without the need for writing.
