Description

This building, located at 8 The Quay in Bideford, is a public house, now serving as a shop and offices. It dates to the late 19th century, although the front elevation was likely altered in the 1930s. The structure incorporates significant 17th-century architectural detail originating from a house previously on the site. The exterior is rendered and solid, with a steeply-pitched hipped slate roof and rendered chimneys on each side wall. It is three storeys high, with a three-window front. The ground floor has been modified, but the upper storeys retain a simple Art Deco design, featuring metal windows and a prominent stepped projection to the centre of the top floor. The first-floor front room contains an early to mid-17th-century plaster overmantel displaying the Grenville arms and a high-relief figure, widely believed to be Sir Bevil Grenville (died 1643), who is thought to have lived in a town house on this site. A date of 1643 appears on the overmantel, though this has not been documented by local historians. The building functioned as the Three Tuns Inn for part of the 19th century.
