Description
No. 8, Allhalland Street is a house, likely dating from the 17th century, that was remodelled in the late 18th or early 19th century. It is currently used as flats and a shop. The front of the building is solid and rendered, while the rear shows painted brick, stone rubble, and timber framing. The roof is slate-covered, and the rear of the front range features an old red brick chimney. A second chimney, partly rebuilt, is on the right gable end. The house has a double-fronted appearance along Allhalland Street and an attached rear wing set at a right angle. There is a cart entrance leading to Chapel Street at the left-hand end of the building. The house extends over three storeys and has a three-window front. The ground storey has horizontal channelling. The front door is a 19th-century half-glazed design with a raised surround and an open triangular pediment supported by shaped brackets. There are 20th-century garage doors on the left and a 12-paned fixed sash window to the right. The second storey has eight-paned sash windows. The third storey features plain, late 20th-century windows. Inside, the ceiling over the entrance to Chapel Street has a 17th-century chamfered beam with run-out stops, matching the width of the street.
