Description
This is a bank barn located about 10 metres east of South Knighton House, likely built in the 18th century, with the north end converted into a cottage in the early or mid-19th century. The barn is constructed of stone rubble and features a hipped roof covered with corrugated iron, along with a projecting chimneystack at the north gable end. It has two storeys and retains several old plank doors on the exterior.
Inside, the south ground-storey room was used for cider making, with fittings for an apple-crusher hanging from the upper floor beams and a cider press located at the south end. The press includes iron screw and cog-wheels, while the pressing trough has been removed, although a small granite trough for collecting juice remains. The barn above has double doors on the east side.
The cottage end features gable fireplaces on both storeys, each with a segmental brick arch. The ground-storey fireplace has a wooden chimneypiece with round moulded panels in the top corners, and a simple staircase against the south wall blocks a former doorway into the cider room. The wall at ground-storey level is made of stone, while at the second-storey level it consists of timber studs covered with lath and plaster. The roof contains old trusses with collars pegged to the faces of the principal rafters. This building is included for its group value.
