Description
Newcombe and Day chest tombs are located about 22 meters southeast of the vestry of the Church of St Mary and St Martin in Chudleigh. These tombs date from the mid to late 19th century. The western tomb is a large and austere granite chest featuring a moulded plinth, corner pilasters, a hipped lid, and sunk panels on each side. An inscription on the north side commemorates Montague Newcombe, who died in 1869. To the east, there is a grey limestone coffin slab designed in the medieval style, which has a coped lid with a cross carved in relief and a granite base. Inscriptions on the sides in metal letters honor John Newcombe Day, who died in 1852, along with other family members.
