Description

Spindleberry Cottage is a small house, likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, or possibly earlier. The walls are of whitewashed cob and the roof is thatched, with a gable on the left end and a hip on the right. A projecting stack at the left end includes a bread oven, and the right-end stack has been dismantled. The house originally had a single-depth plan, with two rooms, and an entrance to the right of centre, probably a kitchen to the left and a parlour to the right. The front has an asymmetrical three-window facade with irregularly spaced windows of differing sizes. A 20th-century plank front door is located to the right of centre, sheltered by a horizontal porch hood. The windows are casement windows with 20th-century diamond-leaded panes, with two on the first floor and three on the ground floor. A small 19th or 20th-century attic dormer is on the rear elevation, along with a similar small window to the ground floor on the left and a larger 20th-century window on the right. The interior was not inspected, but may contain features of interest. The cottage has group value with Westbrook Cottage.
