Description
Apple Tree Cottage is a cottage that likely dates back to the 17th century, with some additions made in the late 20th century. It is constructed from whitewashed rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with a thatched roof that has a half-hipped end on the right and a hipped end on the left. The cottage features a large projecting lateral stack at the front, which has set-offs and a rendered shaft.
The layout consists of a single depth, two-room plan, with a 20th-century outshut added to the front on the left and a flat-roofed single-storey addition at the rear right. The exterior is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical front with two windows. The thatch eaves are eyebrowed over the two first-floor windows. The front door, which is made of planks, leads into the outshut and is accompanied by 20th-century timber casements with glazing bars, as well as two 20th-century windows in the right end wall.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to retain some exposed carpentry, and a closer look might lead to a revision of the proposed dating. The cottage forms an attractive thatched pair with Spindleberry Cottage, located at the top of Church Lane.
