Description

This is a farmbuilding, probably from the mid to late 19th century, located about 10 metres west of Bickham Farmhouse. It is constructed of dressed red sandstone, which has been colourwashed and rendered, and features an asbestos slate roof that is gabled at both ends. The building was designed as the powerhouse of the farm during the 19th century and has a rectangular plan, built into the slope of the land at the rear with access to the first floor from the back.

On the ground floor, there is a horse engine in the centre that powered an apple crusher and cider press on the right side, while the left side housed a chaff-cutter, mill, and bruiser. Gearing connected to an external rear wheel powered a threshing machine located in the loft. The building is two storeys tall and has an asymmetrical front, suggesting that the original structure may have been extended on the left side. The right side is more symmetrical, featuring two large round-headed doorways in the centre, with steps leading up to smaller round-headed doorways on either side. There is also a large central round-headed loft doorway with a slated porch canopy supported by brackets.

On the left side, there is a tall square-headed doorway on the ground floor, with the loft above it being weatherboarded. The rear elevation at loft level has two large doors leading to the threshing floor in the centre and to the left, both with segmental arches. The left-hand doorway has a slated porch canopy, and there is a square-headed doorway at the right end. A gearing wheel for operating the threshing machine is located on the rear elevation. Inside, remnants of the machinery can still be seen, including the large timber wheel in the horse-engine house, the cider press and apple crusher on the right, and milling machinery in the loft. The roof features a conventional king post and strut structure. This farmbuilding is an unusually impressive example from the 19th century and has group value with Bickham Farmhouse.
