Description
The Old Mill is a building likely dating from the 18th century, with a 20th-century wing added later. It combines a mill and a miller’s house. The construction is of rendered cob and stone rubble, with a corrugated iron roof, gabled at the ends, and a projecting gable end stack. The building plan features a gable facing the road, with a single-depth design; the mill is located at the rear, while the miller's house occupies the front section, containing a principal heated room and a gable-end entrance leading into a narrow service room. The water wheel has been removed, but significant machinery remains within the mill, which ceased operation around 1880, according to information from the owner. The building is two stories in height for the house portion and three stories for the mill section. The gable end has a 20th-century front door to the right of the stack and two 19th or early 20th-century timber casements with glazing bars to the left. A 20th-century wing extends at a right angle, largely clad in corrugated iron. Internally, a modern fireplace in the house is said to conceal an earlier, larger fireplace. A 20th-century bathroom projects into the first floor of the mill. The mill preserves three gearing wheels, one with timber teeth, two grinding stones, and rear access at first-floor level. Exterior access is somewhat restricted due to undergrowth.
