Description

The Two Mile Oak Inn, originally a farmhouse, dates to the 17th century with later 19th and 20th century additions. The building is constructed of rendered rubble with an asbestos slate roof, gabled on the left and hipped on the right. It features a rendered rubble lateral stack at the rear and a brick stack at the left gable end. Originally, the house had a three-room plan with a through-passage, the left-hand end serving as a lower end and heated by a gable end stack. The hall was heated by a rear lateral stack, with adjoining winder stairs on its left; a small, unheated inner room was also present. The internal layout was substantially altered, likely during conversion to an inn with the removal of major partitions. A 19th-century outshut was added to the rear of the left-hand end, with a single-storey 20th-century extension behind it. The front elevation is asymmetrical, having a four-window arrangement from the late 19th or early 20th century, with 2- and 3-light casement windows. A 19th-century lean-to porch is located to the left of centre, incorporating a bay window to the central room on its right-hand side. A 19th-century panelled door is behind the porch, originally leading to the passage. A 20th-century plank door is located towards the right-hand end. Inside the former hall, a chamfered wood lintel is visible above the fireplace, alongside wooden winder stairs.
