Description
The rustic bridge, located in the woodland about 10 metres north east of Haldon Gate, was originally built to carry a woodland path over a pool, which is now overgrown. It is likely from the late 18th century and is associated with Lawrence Tower, constructed in 1788 for Sir Robert Palk to honor Major General Stringer Lawrence. The bridge is part of a picturesque rustic walk in the woods beneath the 18th century Gothick tower. It features flint construction and has a single span with a rounded arch made of roughly-dressed voussoirs and flint parapets. Historical maps indicate a series of winding tracks through the woodlands surrounding Lawrence Tower, with one pathway, known as the Kings Road, connecting Lawrence Tower to the remains of Haldon House, suggesting that the bridge is part of a Romantic woodland walk.
