Description
Pear Tree Cottage is a house that likely has origins dating back to the 16th century, with significant alterations made in the 20th century. The exterior is whitewashed and rendered, probably using cob, and features a slate roof that is gabled at both ends. There is a front lateral projecting stack with a brick shaft. The original layout of the house has largely changed, but it is thought that the central room was originally the hall or kitchen. The narrow room on the right side may have been the old cross or through passage, while a third room on the left side creates a single-depth, three-room plan for the main range, along with a later single-storey lean-to addition at the rear. The 20th-century alterations included a roof replacement. The cottage is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with four windows. The approximately central lateral stack features set-offs and a rectangular oven. The front door is located to the left of the stack and is sheltered by a porch canopy supported by brackets. There are two large buttresses to the right of the stack. The windows are various 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. Inside, the house has been largely modernized, but the central ground floor room still has an axial beam with step stops and a fireplace. Although the grate is from the 20th century, it retains an old timber lintel that extends to the left and right with step stops. Despite the modern updates, the house maintains an attractive asymmetrical exterior and some internal features from the 16th century.
