Description
Lyalls is a house that likely dates from the 18th century or earlier, with a 19th-century extension on the right side. It is constructed from rendered stone rubble, while the extension is made of brick. The roof is thatched and hipped at both ends, featuring a left end stack and an axial stack, although the brick chimney shaft in the front wall no longer exists.
The current layout consists of a single depth with three rooms wide, including an unheated room in the center and a small one-room addition at the right end. Some internal partitions have been altered, making it challenging to determine the original plan. However, it is possible that the 18th-century arrangement was similar to the present, with heated rooms on either side of a central unheated room, which was likely originally a dairy. The heated rooms may have been connected by a corridor behind the dairy. The asymmetry of the front elevation suggests that there might have been an earlier plan, possibly including a through passage, as indicated by a blocked rear doorway opposite the front entrance.
The house is two storeys high and features an asymmetrical front with three windows. There is a rustic porch with a gabled thatched roof located to the right of the center of the main range. The windows are a mix of two- and three-light casements with glazing bars. The rear elevation, which faces Lyalls Cottage across a courtyard, has five windows with regular fenestration of three-light casements, each with ten panes, except for one smaller casement with glazing bars in a blocked doorway.
Inside, the ground floor rooms have large plain crossbeams and exposed joists. The left ground floor room contains an open fireplace with a plain lintel, which has been largely reconstructed. The first floor and roof space were not inspected, but straight principals are said to be visible in the first floor rooms. Lyalls is part of a good group with Lyalls Cottage.
