Description
Groom's Cottage at the entrance to the drive to Ashcombe Tower was designed by Brian O'Rorke and built between 1933 and 1936. The cottage is constructed of stone rubble, which is whitewashed and rendered, featuring rusticated stone quoins similar to those found at Ashcombe Tower. It has a thatched roof that is half-hipped at both ends and a central axial stack with a rusticated stone shaft. The building showcases a Free Vernacular Revival style, reflecting the exterior design of the main house.
The plan consists of two rooms wide with a central entrance and rear service rooms in an outshut. The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front. The central front door has rusticated jambs and is topped by a flat porch canopy supported on brackets. There are two-light casement windows with glazing bars, positioned one on either side of the door and one above on the first floor.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted that the cottage is part of a stable yard that originally included garages and petrol pumps. All the buildings in the yard were thatched, but Groom's Cottage is the only surviving thatched structure in the group.
