Description

Cockhaven House is a former farmhouse dating to the early 19th century, and possibly incorporating fabric from an earlier building. The external walls are colourwashed plastered stone, with a 2-span slate roof, gabled at the ends. There are end stacks to the front of the main block, and a large projecting stack to the right end of the rear block. The house has a double-depth plan with two rooms wide and a central passage, where a staircase rises axially between the two left-hand rooms. The principal rooms are at the front, with a kitchen to the rear right and a service room to the rear left. A single-storey block formerly adjoined the left side of the house, remodelled in the 1970s into a two-storey block. The kitchen stack’s size suggests that earlier building fabric was incorporated into the 19th-century house. The front of the house is symmetrical with three bays, featuring a 20th-century central front door and gabled porch. Canted bay windows, likely dating to the late 19th century, are positioned on either side, with 12-pane sashes in the central lights and 4-pane sashes with glazing bars in the outer lights. First-floor windows are 16-pane sashes from the early 19th century. The interior features early 19th-century joinery. A large open kitchen fireplace exists, complete with an iron lintel and remnant bread oven, indicating it has been reduced in size. The roof structure consists of king post and strut trusses with metal fixings. Cockhaven House is an attractive early 19th-century house, clearly visible from the road.
