Description

A pair of cottages, originally a single house, likely dating from the 17th century, with alterations probably occurring in the 19th century and modernisation in the 20th. The building has rendered rubble walls and a gable-ended slate roof. There are two rendered rubble stacks, one at the left gable end with a brick shaft, a lateral stack at the front, and a rendered brick stack on the right-hand gable. Originally, the house was laid out with three rooms and a through-passage, with a front lateral stack serving the hall and a gable stack for the left-hand, likely smaller, room. A newel staircase is located at the rear of the hall. The cottages were divided in the 19th century, with number 19 on the left and number 21 on the right, and number 21 is currently being renovated. A 20th-century outshut is at the rear of number 19. The front has an asymmetrical four-window arrangement. Number 19 has a two-window front with early 20th-century two-light casements on the first floor. On the ground floor, it features a three-light early 20th-century casement to the far left, an early 20th-century plank door to its right, sheltered by a shallow slate hood, and a 19th-century 12-pane sash window. Number 21 has early 20th-century two-light casements on the first floor. On the ground floor, it incorporates a three-light 20th-century casement to the far right, a 19th-century panelled door to its left, a late 20th-century two-light casement with small panes to the left of the stack, and a projecting rectangular stairwell to the rear of number 21, positioned at the left of centre, with a small window opening. The interior was inaccessible during the survey, but contains a wooden newel staircase, and other 17th-century features may be concealed.
