Description
Challabrook Cross is a medieval cross-shaft located on a public footpath about 350 metres northeast of Challabrook Farm in Bovey Tracey. Made of granite, the cross-shaft is mutilated but retains part of the cross-head. The right-hand side has been cut back to serve as a gatepost, with two iron hinges still in place. The shaft is rectangular in section and tapers slightly on the unaltered left side. Remnants of the left arm and head of the cross are weathered, and there are said to be traces of a cross incised on each face. A metal plaque attached to the shaft bears the inscription: "This old cross once marked the grave of a royalist officer who fell near here 1645 when Cromwell's troops defeated the Royalists. A.J.W. 1923," which is considered to be wholly fanciful.
