Description

St Marys is a church army home, originally built as a country house around 1860, with minor additions in the 20th century. The building is constructed of squared stone rubble with red-tiled roofs, decorative ridge tiles, and stone chimneystacks featuring moulded weatherings and caps, arranged asymmetrically. The main structure comprises two parallel ranges, with a central entrance porch on the north side and an adjoining chapel to the west. There have been 20th-century additions to the south. The building is two storeys and garret height, while the chapel and the 20th-century additions are single-storeyed. Designed in a High Victorian Gothic style, it incorporates many pointed arches and gables, although with limited mouldings. The west front features a large projecting gable with a canted bay window on the right and another canted bay window with a hipped roof on the left. A small doorway is centred, above which is a large three-light stair window; the bases of the window lights are stepped to match the stair. Each window light has stone transoms and pointed arches, with tiny balls in the spandrels of all but the stair windows. The building was formerly the country house of the 2nd Lord Halifax.
