Description

Riverside Mill, built in 1854, originally served as stables for Bridge House (now the Riverside Inn). It was later used as a telephone and cable works. The building is constructed of granite and slatestone rubble with red and yellow brick dressings, and has slate roofs with clay ridge tiles. It is arranged around a courtyard, with a two-storey, eight-window front facing the River Bovey. The windows on either side of the front are set within the gable ends of the side ranges. A square tower rises from the third bay from the right, featuring a pyramidal slate roof. A large iron water wheel, rebuilt in 1955, stands at the base of the tower; its purpose was to pump water to Bridge House. The tower’s lower stage has round-headed windows, while the upper stage, likely rebuilt, is of yellow brick with three 20th century windows on each face. Older photographs show this upper stage without windows. The majority of the windows are 2-light wooden casements with 8 panes per leaf, with the exception of the round-headed windows, which have three panes per light. One of these lower round-headed windows is boarded, while the upper one is complete with radial bar glazing. The front facing Fore Street includes a wide, segmental-headed cart entrance with red brick jambs and arch, and two segmental-headed windows above it, also with red brick detailing, each containing a 2-light wooden casement. The interior was not inspected. The building was reportedly saved from demolition in the 1950s through public subscriptions and forms an important group with Bovey Bridge and the Riverside Inn.
