Description

A row of seven shops with complete upper floors, dating from the mid-19th century, is located on Queen Street in Newton Abbot. The buildings are of painted stucco with a continuous slate roof and stacks to the party walls. The plan is double-depth, with rear additions.

The exterior is three storeys high, with a six-window range. A first-floor platband and eaves band, with an ornamental string and eave cornice, run across the facade and returns. Plain pilasters articulate the front, clasping quoins with incised bands to the ground floor. Horned tripartite sash windows are present, with horizontal glazing bars. The second-floor windows have 1/2 panes under segmental arches that cut into the eaves band, featuring consoles to the imposts. First-floor sash windows have raised eared surrounds and segmental-arched pediments. The shop fronts have plate-glass windows flanked by gables over consoles; this feature is present on Nos. 84 & 84A (which combine two shops into one building) and No. 92, with turned colonettes having moulded tops. The platband, eaves band, and cornice continue onto the returns. The return on the right has a symmetrical three-window front with glazing bar sashes, the central recessed open-pedimented bay flanked by pilasters. The rear windows have 6/6-pane sashes.

The interior has not been inspected. The terrace, together with Nos. 16-34 (even), represents a complete design from Newton Abbot's expansion around 1840-1860, under the Courtenays.
