Description
Atway Farmhouse, dating from the 17th century or earlier, stands on the north side of the Bovey Tracey to Moretonhampstead Road. The farmhouse is constructed of roughcast walls and has wheat reed thatched roofs, with a slate patch at the northwest corner. Chimneystacks are present in the gables, except for two later brick stacks on additions to the northeast and southwest.
The layout comprises a main range set at right angles to the road, and a rear cross-wing projecting slightly to the southeast. The main range originally had a single heated room, alongside a passage leading to the cross-wing. The cross-wing initially contained one heated room, potentially with a smaller room behind it. Early staircases are located beside the fireplaces in each of the heated rooms. A later wing was added to the northeast, and lean-tos were likely added to the northwest side of the older house.
The principal southeast front of the main range has two windows. The ground floor has a plank front door to the right, and a single window to the left. All windows are 19th-century 2-light wood casements with two panes per light. Projecting granite ashlar chimneystacks are present on both the main range and the cross-wing, with offsets and tapered tops. The cross-wing stack incorporates a later brick shaft. Slit windows, positioned beside each stack, provide light to the staircases. A second-story window is set into the gable of the main range, to the right of the stack. A similar window is located in the side-wall of the lean-to fronting the road. The cross-wing gable features one window in each storey to the right of the stack; the ground-floor window has transom lights. The added northeast wing has a 4-panelled door at its left-hand end, with a cast-iron knocker and a 3-pane fanlight above it.
A cobbled surface extends to the southeast, between the farmhouse and Atway Cottages. The 19th-century garden railings in this area and the 19th-century iron gate fronting the road are included in the listing.
Inside, the ground-storey room in the main range features chamfered spine beams with scroll-stops. The door from the passage to the cross-wing has a chamfered wood frame with scroll-stops at the top and bottom. The ground-storey room in the cross-wing has chamfered beams. It also contains a large fireplace with granite jambs and a wood lintel with an ovolo-moulded edge and raised run-out stops. The staircase beside the fireplace has a wood door-frame with a cranked head. As a group, the farmhouse and Atway Cottages present a striking appearance along the Moretonhampstead Road.
