Description

The building known as Shippen, located approximately 30 metres south west of West Pitten Farmhouse, is a structure of uncertain original use, currently functioning as a cowhouse with a loft above. It dates from around the 16th century and is constructed of slate rubble with granite quoins. The roof is made of corrugated iron and features gabled ends.

On the south side, there are ground floor doorways with large wooden lintels and one loft door. The right-hand doorway projects slightly, with a window slit positioned above it. The left side of the south wall has been rebuilt in concrete. The north side, facing the yard, includes ventilation slits and a single-storey lean-to with a single-light hollow chamfered granite window frame. The east end has a similar two-light window with two ventilation slits above, along with a granite four-centred arch doorway that has chamfer and pyramid stops on the jambs. At the west end, there is a large elliptically arched chamfered granite doorway leading to the loft.

Inside, the building features large stopped chamfered ceiling beams. The original farmhouse was destroyed by fire, and this building is part of a range of contemporary farm buildings that enclose three sides of a yard. The existing farmhouse on the fourth (east) side was built in the late 19th century or early 20th century, near the site of the original house.
