Description

The farmyard group located northwest of Bearscombe Farmhouse dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is enclosed on all four sides by two-storey buildings constructed from slatestone rubble, with roofs made of slate or corrugated asbestos-cement.

On the north side, there is a long two-storey barn featuring two brick doorways with segmental heads and a large opening with a timber lintel and paired plank doors to the right. In the corner, there is an additional unit with a swept-down roof. The right gable, built into the slope, has a wide plank loading door leading to the loft, and the back of the barn has some vents. Inside, the barn has a scissors roof with nine or ten bays and a stone partition raised in timber towards the left end. A former leat on the north side leads to a wheel pit, although the wheel itself is no longer present.

To the right of the barn, the yard is enclosed by a high stone wall approximately 3.5 metres tall, which contains a recess with a semicircular curved back that was once a water supply point. On the left, or west side of the yard, there is a shippon with two storeys, featuring four openings with segmental heads made of stone voussoirs and one larger square opening. The first floor has two square loading openings.

Returning to the south side, there are three voussoired openings and a square opening beneath two loading openings, with the interior containing a central spine wall made of concrete block. A small gabled wing extends towards the upper barn, featuring a large square opening and a gable raised in concrete block. The east face of the structure is set against the slope and includes a loading opening to the loft in the end gable.

The wall with a niche, which is attached to the barn, curves broadly to provide access to the yard. This large and regular group of buildings is part of a larger assembly of outbuildings associated with Bearscombe Farmhouse and has seen little alteration, aside from the loss of some roof slating and the use of concrete block, which is done unobtrusively.
