Description
The farmyard group located northeast of Bearscombe Farmhouse dates from the late 18th century and 19th century. It is constructed from slatestone rubble with slate roofs. The layout consists of two L-plan groups that are open at the southwest and northeast corners, which include a walled manure pit.
On the left side, there is a barn that is likely older than the rest of the group, featuring two storeys. It has three doors and two windows facing the yard, all with segmental stone voussoirs, along with a small square light on the right and two continuous rows of square pigeon openings with a landing ledge. The right gable is plain, while the left gable has a square loading opening at road level leading to the loft. The return wing on the left has a set-back high section with a door and vent, followed by the main section that includes four doors with brick segmental arches and a central square loading door at the eaves. The outer wall features two loading doors at loft level.
The L-block to the southeast consists of three sections, including an L-plan cart shed with a hipped outer end supported by one timber post and two cast iron posts, along with an enclosed bay at the hipped end. This section adjoins a two-storey gabled stable block that has three windows and three doors, all with brick segmental arches, including a double-width door on the right. The upper level has two small square openings. Extending from the left gable is a single-storey unit resting on three broad rubble piers, with a covered way leading to a set-back wall that features alternating doors and iron hatchways. The front piers have rounded backs.
In the center of the yard, there are remains of stone walls on three sides, open at the south end, reasonably complete along the long sides, but broken at the north end. This farmyard is part of a larger group of farm buildings that are arranged around the farmhouse and remain in their original state. The interiors have not been inspected.
