Description
Yelland Farmhouse is a circa early 17th century house, altered in the 20th century. The building appears to be the central range of a larger house, comprising two rooms with a wide central passage. It is constructed of slate rubble with a slate-hung south west end wall, and has a concrete tile and slate roof with gabled and hipped ends. The farmhouse has a two-storey gabled porch to the front, with a dressed slate round arch and a large, nail-studded plank door featuring covermoulds. The doorframe is ovolo moulded on the inside only. A chimney stack is located at the north east gable end, and an axial stack is near the south west end, which incorporates a stable addition. The front elevation has a four-window range with 20th century casements, the right-hand windows having concrete lintels and the left-hand windows segmental brick arches. Adjoining the north west end is a stable building with a loft, accessible by external stone stairs with an integral dog kennel below. A lean-to is attached to the north east end. Internally, a portion of a plank and muntin screen remains on the right-hand side of the wide passage, which contains later stairs and partitions. The screen on the left has been removed, but its head beam retains mortices for a screen. The hall features chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and similar joists, although many have been removed. The gable-end fireplace has been altered and now has two red brick arches. The roof contains seven trusses with mortised apices, two tiers of threaded purlins (the lower ones visible in the first floor rooms), and dove-tailed principals for lap-joints; the collars are missing.
